These buoyant aircraft are tethered lenticular aerostats with a central riser line system (a winch for big types) allowing their ascent via ground control to significant heights. They provide an aerial platform for people and/or systems, recovered to ground level and moored in a fixed low level way when not in use – obviating need for ground turntable systems.
They are a way to get test data for dirigible types using the same aerostat & ground arrangements. The aerostats, mooring and protection methods also are used for Low Captured Aerostats, enabling early revenue for further developments.
Aerostats designed are as shown respectively above and below. As elevator platforms they notionally will be able for: LS-LT1 (Ø1 m) 100 gm, LS-LT15 (Ø15 m) 200 kg, LS-LT20 (Ø20 m) 600 kg and LS-LT40 (Ø40 m) 5000 kg payloads.

With reduced drag form, they drift downwind less than spherical or other bulbous balloon types, are steadier (due to aerodynamic lift developed) and, when moored, manage higher airspeeds (storms).
Luffships Ltd (LSL) is interested to work with aerostat producers and operators to enable them under agreeable terms for cooperation. In return, LSL will take responsibility for the R&D work, certification, guidance and support necessary. Further information from contact.
Naturally, designs for high altitudes and other sizes would follow – depending on what operators and customers want.
Notes:
- The fin design is retractable but notional (may not be needed).
- Further types suiting customer needs are possible, which may be arranged through contact.
- Although designs for the larger (manned) types have been prepared they are not ready for prototype production, test or the certification programme yet – needing interest for them.
- Please contact us if you would like to support their further development or be an operator for them.
